Are certain formatting tags off-limits in OpenLP?

My general theme is for left-aligned text, but I occasionally want/need to use some other alignment, such as right-aligned text. I tried to add a custom formatting tag. I got a couple of errors attempting it, and I realised I had made basic errors, so I fixed them. Finally, OpenLP accepted my custom tag, and I tried using it. It made no difference to the way that my text was formatted.

I hope that the screenshot of my custom tag syntax uploads correctly. I can't see a way to preview my post.

AndrewK I use "jr" as the tag with the HTML as:

to align text right. I use this a lot on custom slides to indicate how many slides on, say, longer quotes (1/4, for example).

I couldn’t use ‘ar’ as a tag. It kept telling me that it was an invalid tag. That was one of my repeated errors! But more importantly, I’m trying to figure out what I did incorrectly.

Are the quotation marks around the word right an integral part of the ‘align’ tool? I hadn’t seen that in the information I have read. I can try and remember that bit of important information.

I also didn’t see anything about ‘DIV’ in my reading. I don’t know what it does or means.

Again, something else to learn.

Where does this one come?

And this one goes over multiple slides? Without having to be repeated on every slide?

So I have some liturgy of say, 10 slides with a congregational part being 5 slides in the middle. To set them apart from the service leader’s part, I would like to have the congregation’s words right-aligned. Because they are in a sequence, I can use this command to put the right-alignment on the first slide in the sequence specifying the number of slides that I want to be right-aligned.

Have I understood you correctly?

If I have only one or two lines that I want right-aligned, can I use this same "jr" tag? Or do I have to use the method that @PaulRowell showed me?

I'm especially interested here because I have many custom slides that need bold type from the beginning to the end. As I have understood it until now, I have to repeat the bold attribute on every slide because it doesn't carry over from one slide to the next. However, if it's possible to get alignment carrying over, then why not bold character formatting?

AndrewK You have to first create the custom tag for OpenLP to recognize it. If your theme has either centered or left-aligned text, and if you want some text to be right-aligned, then you must tag them in each slide, after first creating the custom tag.

In the HTML part of the custom tag creation, enter:
<span style="float:right">

When you tab to the next section it should autofill with </span>. The quotes in the HTML is a necessary part.

With regard to bold type, you could simply copy a theme and name it "theme (bold)" or some such and apply it to the parts that need to be bold, after tweaking it to show bold text. Themes apply to all the slides whereas custom tags can be used for portions of a slide.

Formatting tags will only last across one slide, I think what j_tizzle meant was that they use the align right so that they can put a slide count 1/4, 2/4, 3/4, 4/4 on say four slides at the right of the slide. (We use the Include slide number in footer option on the General settings for this. We do tweak one of the CSS files to make this a bit bigger, there is a post about this elsewhere)

You have to create the "ar" tag before you can use it. It needs to match the Custom Formatting tag picture I posted.

I suspect that the tag that j_tizzle posted is not deprecated like the tag I posted so I would go with that definition. Thus my custom tag would become:

If you want several lines to align to the right then you don't have to use the tag for each line as in the example below:

PaulRowell Yes, if you want formatting to persist over several slides that comes at the theme level. A custom tag applies to each slide.

The bold across several slides question would best be handled using a theme where you can choose the font and whether it is bold or italics in the second screen of the theme wizard:

You can then apply this theme to a custom slide or song individually. Don't forget that you need to use the song level theme option if you want songs to use their theme and not the service or global themes.

I understood that, I think. But it never hurts me to be reminded of 'basic' things.

I thought I had got most of that before. Apparently, not well enough to implement it.

I read the manual again this afternoon. At least, I read parts of it. I'm sorry for having missed so much in my first time reading. I can't guarantee no more questions, though.
