The intergration of VLC would assist in the open-platform development of OpenLP media capabilities. See the porject API reference: http://wiki.videolan.org/ExternalAPI

Just a thought as we embrace more operating platforms that we can focus on other presentation specifics and let the VLC team enhance the media side and they would then trouble shoot and general media issues if platform specifics arose. Pretty much the same as the introduction of OOo Impress has facilitated cross platform capabilites without compromising licence issues or consuming the team with a built-in facility.

I have found VLC to be very efficient and use it as my default player on both Linux and Windows. Some of the features that could enhance OpenLP are:

Regarding codecs I have found if VLC can't play it nothing can.
It also plays FLV files which are becoming increasingly widespread with the explosion of using Youtube clips.
It can accept an external device as an input aswell (Live camera feeds)
Video backgound option could be implimented using VLC's overlay mode where is will automatically replace the color RGB 001 (colour that is 0 for red, 0 for green and 1 for blue) with the video and show everything else. so if the backgound colour of a slide is 001 it will show the text on-top of the video feed. (If the text was 001 the video would peak-through the text)
Cross-platform code
By the way VLC also has recording capabilities, but I am not sure if it would meet the desired enhancement of being able to record the line-input to MP3.

The only current downside is that I am not sure if the VLC team have been able to buffer looping on the video clips and as such there is sometimes a slight delay wit loops

Do you think it would be beneficial to partner with them?
