3.1.5 was working fine - then it wasn't

On Christmas Eve, I prepared the service at home on my M1 Pro MacBook Pro. Later that evening, I went to the church to check that everything was okay, and it was. (I've been having some difficulties getting the settings right for screen width.) The service was saved. Everything was normal.

Rather than leave my laptop in the church overnight, I brought it home and took it with me early - about 2 hours before the service was due to start. Nothing had been changed, but suddenly the service wouldn't open. It was an invalid file.

I shut down the computer, disconnected everything and went through the whole startup process from the beginning. There was a change but for the worse. The service opened but it was empty. Huh?

And that was the last time OpenLP opened successfully, if you can call that a success.

I tried deleting just the OpenLP package, redownloading it and then reinstalling it. I didn't expect that to work and I was right.

I then tried deleting everything related to OpenLP, redownloading from the website and reinstalling. I hoped that it would be successful. I was disappointed. I deleted everything again, rebooted the laptop - just in case! - redownloaded from the website and tried to reinstall. This time I didn't even get through the setup before OpenLP hung.

I'm lost. And I've lost all credibility at church, again.

My comment may not be relevant because it's based on my experience with v 3.1.2 on a Mac at home and windows at church. If we modify and save a service at church, I get an invalid file message at home. The problem seems to be that the church computer is not saving image thumbnails and I don't know why. Another on the a/v team has the same problem going back to his Windows PC at home. I suggest you check the .osz file to see if the thumbnails were saved when you modified it at church. Change .osz to .zip on a backup copy, unzip it at see if there is a thumbnails folder.

I haven't investigated enough to put in a bug report and it doesn't make that much sense if you are using the same laptop in both places, but it may be worth checking the contents of the service file. Even with the same laptop, it's a different environment.

You are brave. If solving an issue involves reinstalling OpenLP just before a service, we tell the worship team there won't be any projection. Fortunately, we said from the beginning that we could not guarantee projection or streaming every Sunday. Our worship team is 100% on board with that. We'll probably postpone upgrading to the new release until summer, when we can try it out without the pressure.

My first question is whether your Mac is Apple Silicon or an Intel Mac.

I have an older MacBook Pro which, of course I didn’t have with me on Christmas morning, that rarely has any problems running OLP. It’s an Intel machine.

How do you look inside the service file? I don’t think that I have ever even thought of that before! I can look in other files, but not sure about that one.

I never ran 3.1.2 so I don’t know what the differences between it and 3.1.5 are. If it is support for Apple Silicon, then I probably won’t be able to go back to it, unless I use the older Mac. Painful, but I suppose it would be worth it if I know it will work!

Something else that I haven’t figured out yet is why I can’t run OLP again. Even after deleting the software and using AppDelete (I think!) to find all of the files that relate to OLP and then deleting them and emptying the trash, I still cannot run the programme.

Why? And what do I need to do in order to get OLP running again?

Has anyone been able to run OpenLP 3.1.5 on Macbook pro Sequoia?? I downloaded the file but it wont run ir or install it.

I’m running 3.1.5 in Sequoia on both Intel and Apple Silicon, and it works well. I would check a couple of things:

Be sure every machine is running the exact same version of OpenLP.
On macOS, be sure the “Impress” option is disabled in the presentations prefs. There is an as-yet-undetermined issue with LibreOffice Impress and OpenLP that can cause OLP to hang at startup if that option is enabled.
